Membership Information
Evergreen Soaring is a chapter member of the Soaring Society of America, hence all ESI members must be members of the SSA.
When you join ESI, if you are not already a member of the SSA you will be billed for their standard membership level and become an SSA member. Should you join ESI in mid-year, you will be billed for the fraction of the year remaining and the full next year. SSA dues are renewed in December of each year.
In addition to joining the SSA, all club members must pay monthly dues - and a flight fee for use of the club's gliders. We strive to keep costs low, and also offer special rates for families, students, and other considerations. For more information about costs, please see the rates and fees page.
Evergreen Soaring has some of the lowest membership costs of any glider club in the country, and we support this through volunteerism amongst our members. For the club to flourish, membership support beyond your dues is imperative. Traditionally, this support has taken different forms with different people, but there are some goals.
We ask that:
  • All members support the club financially by paying their dues;
  • All members constantly endeavor to improve their flying abilities;
  • All members put some time into helping out on the field whenever they come out to fly.
We also hope members will strive to someday hold office or other positions of responsibility within the club.
Perhaps most importantly, it is hoped that the members retain their individuality and enthusiasm for the club. That is the way the club has managed to prosper so far. Many of the experienced members have put in years of hard work to make the club the success it is today. It is up to the new membership to take on the responsibilities of the future.
Some new members will jump in quickly and assume a lot of responsibility, while others like to hang back for a while and get to know things well before they lend a hand. Do what works best for you. But a note of caution: please ask another club member to advise you if you are not certain how to do something correctly. There are a lot of procedures which, although seemingly simple, can cause great damage to equipment or personnel if done incorrectly. We just can not afford to operate in any way except the safest manner. Remember, it is in the other club members best interest to assist in your training since that means there will be one more person available to do that job in the future. The only foolish question is the one not asked.
Membership Status Levels
Active Status All dues and Flight Fees up to 90 days old are paid. Members are automatically active unless that member informs the Board otherwise in writing -or- falls into arrears in payment more than 90 days.
Inactive Status Normal Dues and Flight Fees suspended, replaced by a $5/month maintenance fee. Inactive Members have no privileges with the club. Status must be requested in writing to the Club Treasurer and can extend indefinitely. In order to discourage short term inactive status, it is the policy of the board that members requesting in writing to reactivate their membership after less than 9 months may be required to pay all dues for that period of inactivity.
Forced Inactive Status Dues and Flight Fees are suspended and Member has no privileges with the club. This status is automatic when a member fails to pay their obligations to the club after 90 days. Request to reactivate must be made in writing to the Board and will only be considered by the board after full repayment of outstanding obligations has been received by the Treasurer. Additionally, it is the policy of the board to require the repayment of all dues starting from the period of forced inactivity to the date of reactivation of their membership. Members who fall into Forced Inactive Status a second time within a 3 year period may have their Club membership terminated by the Board.
